Onda VI10 of China
The first tablet running the brand new 4.0 Android, also known under the name of Ice Cream Sandwich, is priced at only 132 US $. The Tablet is called Onda VI10.
At such a low price we would expect of modest, but this tablet provides in fact honorably. It has a 7 inch capacitive touchscreen display, a front facing camera and a camera 2 megapixel rear, both the WiFi connectivity and 3 G, USB 2.0, HDMI 1.3, and a microSD slot.
Its internal architecture is somewhat a novelty on the Tablet market. It works on a MIPS XBurst CPU clocked at 1 GHz, which apparently excels in energy efficiency and is coupled with a GPU of GC860 living at 444 Mhz. As such, it is capable of 1080 p HD playback/encoding/decoding video and supports 8 hours of constant video playback, 7 hours of navigation web enabled and 300 hours of standby.
Despite being a known player less it is entering the market seems quite serious with certification of Google and support on the side. Senior vice president of mobile at Google Andy Rubin said he was "pleased to see the entry based on MIPS Android 4.0 tablets on the market. MIPS has hitherto been dominant embedded devices, but apparently sees an opportunity to compete with the arm in the space of the tablet.
Overall, Onda VI10 seems to be a very good deal for only $132, but in the tradition of getting what you pay for there should be compromise. First of all, it is doubtful that a 1 GHz CPU MIPS Xburst would correspond to the dual-core processors and quad-core based arm tablets which usually make the headlines. MIPS claims the best quality-price ratio, but they rather light on detail.
A manufacturer of mobile games Gameloft is on board, however, and website Ainovo said that onda VI10 can play Gameloft real games including Spider Man game pre-installed. So, it should be reasonable to expect these games to run well.
Secondly, the Android application compatibility can be a problem because they are usually compiled with ARM processors in mind. The best guarantee are pre-installed applications and those specifically claimed to support the MIPS architecture, but for everything else, your mileage may vary.
If the invasion of space of Android tablets MIPS successful by any measure, it could also strain the question of Android fragmentation due to the need to support architecture yet another. Note that Intel wants too much with its platform Atom. Google will find a clever way to solve this problem in a way that makes effective Android development while providing Android users a consistent experience and maximum compatibility with all devices. This will be a difficult to shoot feat.
That said, Onda VI10 probably represents the best option still in its price category. As a Tablet Android 4.0 full blown at a price also attractive it makes easier for those who know more shelling out for a tablet to soak their feet and give it a try. It should certainly be good for watching videos, surfing the web or play a game or two on your couch or on the go, at the very least.
